‘Pleased to met you, Hope you guess my name...'

It’s The Bee Guy…but you can call me Mr The Bee Guy!
I’ve struggled to theme this website, to content it, to tie it down.
How do I represent what we do here on a couple of 2D scrolling pages of text and images?
How do I capture the essence of what we are and do when you can’t smell it, taste it, feel the gentle breeze on your face? Or the nettle sting. On your arm. Can’t hear the hum of a passing queen bumblebee or the joyous trickle of clean spring water…

You need to talk to corporates in their language they tell me.
You need to be scientifically serious in tone and language.
You need to be careful not too offend.
Not to scare people
Not to worry people.
You need to be positive not negative.
You can’t be that honest.
You need to filter that. Edit that.
Then it hit me like a bolt as I sit in the bathroom (yeah no filter – I do my best thinking there) one sunny Sunday morning in May watching the shadows of the willow trees just outside the window dance wild and unashamedly on the adjacent wall…
No I need to be me.

For I am The Bee Guy and the project that is World Bee Sanctuary formed in my head.
So it’s in my language.
It’s real.
No filters.
No regrets.
I’d rather that than no bees.

'But what's puzzlin' you, Is the nature of my game...'

The name is Handrick but back in 2018 people started referring to me as The Bee Guy.
I’ve been called worse so I took it and now well I guess I am The Bee Guy.

So why The Bee Guy?

Back in 2012 I bought a small farm with my wife, and at that time three young kids, down a half mile lane in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains adjacent to a one school, one church, no pub village.

To disappear.

You see, don’t tell anyone but I find people hard…and what is going on on this beautiful planet even harder.
They’re grand like…but in small doses!

But guess what happened?
People followed me down that lane. Feckers!

Why?

I’ve always had a problem keeping my mouth shut about injustice.
Ever since I was a kid. See something – wrong say it. Why wouldn’t you?
And down this lane, on this farm, in the arsehole of the countryside I started to see injustice all around. And nature was the victim.
Bees were the victims.
So me being me…I started to speak up – for bees and nature.
And people started listening.
Thanking me.
Encouraging me.
And others that should have been speaking up.
Well…they tried to shut me up. Still do.
Yet here I am.
And here we are…

I’m not an environmentalist. Don’t want to be.
I’m a quiet spoken, socially awkward husband and dad.
People tell me I’ve a way with words.
I’m not sure.
But I use them to advocate for bees.
For nature.
For a better future.
For my kids.
What else would a dad do?
So this website may not be your standard one. That’s okay.
And it may not hit the points you need. That’s okay too.
But it will reflect me – and my family’s project.
Our ethos, our capabilities and our journey.
It will be honest and raw and real.
And that’s the best thing we can do on and for this planet right now.
Be real.
Yeah…Be Real.
